Belvedere Plantation (circa 1760s) 1601 Belvedere Drive, Fredericksburg, VA 22408, 540-371-8494, Built along the Rappahannock River by Colonel William Dangerfield, this plantation was modest sized by the standards of the time, yet still very prosperous. A variety of fun activities for children, such as a corn maze and a pumpkin patch, are scheduled during the year. They are open November to mid-April. map

Fredericksburg Court House (circa 1852) 815 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, VA 24401, 540-373-1776, Designed by the architect of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York and the original building for the Smithsonian Institute, this Victorian Gothic Revival style building is a delight to behold. Visitors can see a display of Mary Ball Washington's will and the document appointing her husband, Augustine, trustee of Fredericksburg while at this court house. map

George Washington's Ferry Farm 268 Kings Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22405, 540-370-0732, The setting for the stories of the cherry tree and the silver dollar thrown across the Rappahannock River happened at this boyhood home of George Washington, who lived here from 1738 to 1752. An important part of the Union lines during the Battle of Fredericksburg was also held here and archaeological digs continue in the search for the original farm buildings and houses of Washington's youth. George Washington's Fredericksburg Foundation 1201 Washington Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, 540-373-3381, Kenmore, one of the finest 18th- century houses in Virginia, lies in the heart of historic Fredericksburg. The house was built by patriot Fielding Lewis (who built a gunnery during the Revolutionary War to arm the Continental Army) for his wife, Betty, the sister of George Washington. It contains the most elaborate plasterwork to survive from colonial America. Ceilings at Kenmore were made by the same unidentified "stucco man" who worked at Mount Vernon.

Mary Washington House 1200 Charles Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, 540-373-1569, George Washington purchased this house in 1772 for his mother, Mary Ball Washington, who spent her last seventeen years in this comfortable home. A wide array of period furnishings, including some of Mary's personal possessions, are on display in the house. map

Rising Sun Tavern (circa 1760) 1304 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401, 540-371-1494, Built by Charles Washington as his home, this building was later operated as a tavern. Much of the woodwork in the tavern is original, and the rooms are filled with period furnishings. The Tap Room features a reconstructed bar cage and a fine collection of 18th and 19th century English and American pewter. "Tavern wenches" entertain visitors as though they have just stepped off a stagecoach in a lively interpretation of 18th century tavern life. more... map
