Situated on 500 acres, this National Historic Landmark was the home of Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his wife Rebecca Tayloe. The home features a conservation and visitors center, as well as a walking tour of the Menokin ruin and grounds. The Ball family, George Washington’s maternal kin, were parishioners of this historic church and the extant gallery in the church was constructed for their use. The church contains the oldest know altar tablets, Decalogue, Lord’s Prayer, and Apostles’ Creed, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a communion table and baptismal font from the Colonial era. The boyhood home of Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, the brothers who signed the Declaration of Independence, this plantation also became the birthplace of General Robert E. Lee in 1807. The Great Hall in the center of the house is one of the most architecturally significant rooms to survive from colonial America and the 1,670 acre plantation is managed as a working farm with costumed interpreters leading tours through the house. A log cabin dining room serves lunch daily and a visitor center and gift shop are also on the property. more...

Named in honor of George Washington's mother, who was born at Epping Forest near the village of Lancaster Courthouse, this museum is located in the circa 1800 Lancaster House and it contains a wide range of exhibits depicting life in Lancaster County over its 350 years. One of the oldest and largest wineries in Virginia, this property was built in 1834 and it has served as a boys' school known as Washington Academy, a Civil War garrison, a courthouse, and a dairy.
