On College Hill in downtown Providence since 1638, the First Baptist Church in America allows guided and self-guided tours of the Meeting House, the oldest congregation in Rhode Island and the first Baptist Church in America; June through Columbus Day, Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturdays 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There is also a guided tour each Sunday following the worship service, which takes place at 11:00 a.m. the second Sunday in September through June and at 10:00 a.m., July through Labor Day. This National Historic Landmark, a three-story, 20-room Renaissance Revival with Italian Palazzo elements; was for textile merchant Henry Lippitt, his wife and their six children. Several generations of the Lippitt family called this home for over 110 years. The majority of their furnishings still exist in the house. The Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum is open May through October on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Private tours are welcome by appointment throughout the week. The Jeremiah Dexter House is "a rare example of an early Providence farmhouse which has survived almost without alteration, except for a two-room ell added in 1850." Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this home is located on the site of the French Army's encampment in November 1782. Before becoming the winter residence of the elegant Gammell family during the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century home of Providence utility, real estate and trolley mogul, Marsden Perry, this was home to John Brown, a businessman, patriot, politician, China Trade pioneer and slave trader, and later his daughters and their families. This three-story mansion is filled with period furnishings and decorative arts. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Old State House is "one of five former Rhode Island state houses that survive today." Important events that have taken place here. The General Assembly repealed a previous act of allegiance to the crown, known as Rhode Island Independence Day; in 1776. The Assembly passed the first act in the United States providing for the gradual emancipation of slaves in 1784. In 1781, George Washington attended a dinner and ball given here in his honor. He returned as President in 1790, to attend a banquet commemorating Rhode Island's ratification of the federal Constitution.
