This historically significant house was the home of three important generations of Carrolls: Charles Carroll the Settler, the first Attorney General of Maryland; Charles Carroll of Annapolis, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, one of four Marylanders and the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence. America’s “most beautiful Anglo-Palladian house” was built by English architect William Buckland for wealthy tobacco planter Matthias Hammond. The Hammond-Hardwood House features one of the largest collections of paintings by Charles Willson Peale and furniture by John Shaw in the area. An elegant National Historic Landmark restored by Historic Annapolis Foundation, the William Paca House was one of the first five-part Georgian homes in Annapolis. Paca was one of the four Declaration of Independence signers from Maryland and was governor of Maryland from 1782 to 1785. After being sold in 1780, the house became a part of Carvel Hall, one of the city’s most popular hotels during the 20th century. Guided tours of the house take place hourly. The plaque in the rotunda of the Maryland State House honors the memory of Matthew Henson, the first man to reach the North Pole, on April 6, 1906, during the Artic expedition of U.S. Navy Commander Robert Edwin Peary.
